Coast FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) is a powerful financial milestone. You reach Coast FIRE when your current invested assets are large enough that they will grow—purely through compound interest—to cover all your retirement expenses by the time you reach traditional retirement age. Once you hit your Coast FIRE number, you never need to save another dime for retirement. You can "coast" there while using your current income entirely for present-day expenses, travel, or taking a lower-stress job.
Our calculator uses a two-step process based on standard FIRE principles. First, it determines your ultimate FIRE Target using the 4% Safe Withdrawal Rate (Annual Spend ÷ 0.04). Second, it discounts that future target back to today's dollars using the compound interest formula: Coast Number = FIRE Target / (1 + Real Return Rate) ^ Years to Retire. By default, we use an inflation-adjusted "real" return rate of 7%, which historically reflects the S&P 500's performance after inflation.
The traditional narrative tells you to save a percentage of every paycheck until the day you retire. Coast FIRE flips this script. By front-loading your investments in your 20s and 30s, compound interest does the heavy lifting for the next three decades. Reaching this milestone brings immense psychological freedom—even if you choose to keep saving, knowing you don't have to eliminates a massive source of financial anxiety.
Don't worry! If your current portfolio is below your Coast number, our calculator will tell you exactly how much of a gap remains. Your goal is simply to keep contributing to your investments until your portfolio balance crosses that magic Coast FIRE threshold.
